Arla Foods UK comprises around 2400 UK dairy farmers (members) that form a farmer-owned co-operative. The company relies on communicating with its members throughout the year via a series of major events and ‘town hall’ meetings.
With the advent of Coronavirus – the instruction across Europe was to postpone all physical meetings. Communication is even more important at this time for obvious reasons – but Arla is also pressing ahead with many initiatives including its commitment to be carbon net zero by 2050, it remains essential to update their members on progress in these areas.
Arla’s request to Purple Patch was simple – how can they at a week’s notice communicate remotely with all of their farmers – delivering their update presentation, and more importantly allowing for a two way interactive dialogue with farmers across the UK who by the nature of their locations have a variety of accessibility challenges.
Ordinary solutions such as Skype and Teams are not appropriate for this audience. We quickly established a secure login page that required a unique farmer number as security plus a password that was issued separately to all users. This log in page was accessible to anybody on any device and required nothing more than a fairly good wi-fi or 4G connection from any device. In essence if you can get onto YouTube, you can access this site.
We provided the same level of service for Arla’s webcast as they would expect at a physical event – our team comprised of a producer, a sound engineer, a graphics operator, a cameraman and of course a broadcast engineer. All of the equipment and back ups that we provide at a live event.
“Great feedback and thanks for joining us online. We have had just under 750 members join us for the 4 sessions which has exceeded our expectations. Lots of great questions and engagement from Arla members”.
“Thanks Paul to you and your team. Really pleased with how they went”.
“Hi Paul, I just wanted to thank you and your team for the recent meetings which have been excellent. This format is something we are keen to use again in the future. We will be contacting you shortly….”
A week after their first call to us – Arla broadcast its events across four sessions allowing their members to access the webcast at a time that best suited them. The webcast was fully Arla branded. The presenters delivered their presentations mixed with slides and video as if they were talking to a physical audience. Each session ended with an interactive Q&A session via the Slido App. As a back up for members that were unable to view the broadcast, we also delivered a dial in solution via a secure conference call number. And as a final way of ensuring access for as many members as possible, we delivered an edited version of the stream for use on Arla’s intranet.
